Cannabis Christmas Cookie Recipes

Christmas will feel different this year no matter where you are in the world. Even those who had contentious relationships with their family might be feeling a tinge of longing now that the option to go home is limited, if not altogether impossible. Still, humans will find a way to celebrate what matters, and in the true spirit of Christmas, eat, be merry, and gather over Zoom.

For now, we have memories of years passed and a few Christmas dinner ideas that infuse cannabis.

“When I was maybe twelve years old, a Finnish family moved in next door, and we quickly became friends,” says flir founder, Riley Starr, recalling one of his favourite Christmas traditions. “Finnish culture actually originated a lot of the mythology that Christmas traditions are based on, especially Santa Claus.

We celebrated the holidays with them a number of times. Their dad would leave the house, find somewhere to change into costume, and come strolling down the street back to the house. He'd sit down with his kids and just talk to them, ask them what they had done that year, and what they looked forward to in the year ahead.

They didn't have this idea of Santa as a fantastical being everyone pretended was real, until you got to a certain age. Their dad was just playing a character, and everyone played along. I thought that was cool.”

IS THERE A SPECIFIC DISH THAT REMINDS YOU OF CHRISTMAS?

Riley: A lot of my extended family lives in Alberta, and when my sister and I were kids, we traveled there to celebrate the holidays a few times. It was always hosted by my paternal grandmother, a woman with amazing strength of character. She'd grown up on and run a farm through some pretty tough times, but she also had so much love for her family. I have very clear memories of her dressed to the nines in her finest jewelry, carving (in true Alberta style) a giant prime rib roast.

WHAT IS A PERFECT DISH TO INFUSE WITH CANNABIS FOR CHRISTMAS?

Riley: When it comes to infusing food, I really think it pays to keep it simple. Not just because you're less likely to screw up the dosage and send your friends on a day-long trip to the emerald realm. Something homey and comforting is the best way to set the mood for a mellow experience.

For Christmas, you can't do better than a steaming mug of hot chocolate. Remember, simple doesn't mean basic. Make something from scratch with good-quality cocoa powder, maybe make a batch of homemade marshmallows to top it. Or add a bit of cinnamon and cayenne for a Mexican twist. The best part is, you can fill a thermos and take it along for a walk in a winter wonderland.
